Operation Enduring Bullshit

Kathryn Kolbert of Crooks & Liars points out it’s pretty close to ‘Mission Accomplished’ for team Shrubya, at least as far as locking up the SCOTUS is concerned.  We truly are just an 88-year old heartbeat and a Palin Preznitcy away from a reactionary court in perpetuity.

Great summary of VP debate

Friday, October 3rd, 2008 by greenboy

I couldn’t possibly summarize the Biden/Caribou Barbie debate better than the Rude Pundit.  Here is the nutshell:

Joe Biden kicked Sarah Palin’s perky ass from one end of that stage to another. It was humiliating, watching the bizarro display of Palin, this talking points automaton set on “spunk,” absolutely failing to impart any cogent thoughts or cohesive answers or even string together the surprisingly full sentences she spoke into anything like a policy

I thought of doing something like this after last night’s debate, but I saw that adennak on DailyKos had already done it. It’s so well done I’ll just repost it:

Palin on pregnancy following rape

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008 by fubar

It’s easy to make fun of Sarah Palin’s stumbling interviews. But this clip casts a clear light on where she stands on a very personal issue. Every woman in America should see it. She tries to do her politician thing and squirm out of giving a straight answer, but Couric does her best to pin her down.

Palin’s response to a woman who has been raped and gotten pregnant as a result: sorry, but too bad — you are required to keep it.

Should she get elected, this is going to be the position of the President of U.S. Senate, the person who casts a tie-breaking vote, the second most powerful post in the country, and — should something happen in the next four years to a 72-year-old with a history of recurrent cancer — the President of the United States.

Quotes of the day, 10/2

From a brutal Rolling Stone profile of John McCain:

In its broad strokes, McCain’s life story is oddly similar to that of the current occupant of the White House. John Sidney McCain III and George Walker Bush both represent the third generation of American dynasties. Both were born into positions of privilege against which they rebelled into mediocrity. Both developed an uncanny social intelligence that allowed them to skate by with a minimum of mental exertion. Both struggled with booze and loutish behavior. At each step, with the aid of their fathers’ powerful friends, both failed upward. And both shed their skins as Episcopalian members of the Washington elite to build political careers as self-styled, ranch-inhabiting Westerners who pray to Jesus in their wives’ evangelical churches.

In one vital respect, however, the comparison is deeply unfair to the current president: George W. Bush was a much better pilot.

And on McCain’s running mate, from D-Day:

Do we really know whether or not Sarah Palin is Sacha Baron Cohen’s greatest role?

Will McCain’s next Hail Mary pass be “Here Comes the Bride”?

Saturday, September 27th, 2008 by Swopa

The not-always-reliable UK Sunday Times has a bit of too-good-to-check gossip from Washington, D.C. correspondent Sarah Baxter:

In an election campaign notable for its surprises, Sarah Palin, the Republican vice- presidential candidate, may be about to spring a new one — the wedding of her pregnant teenage daughter to her ice-hockey-playing fiancé before the November 4 election.

Inside John McCain’s campaign the expectation is growing that there will be a popularity boosting pre-election wedding in Alaska between Bristol Palin, 17, and Levi Johnston, 18, her schoolmate and father of her baby. “It would be fantastic,” said a McCain insider. “You would have every TV camera there. The entire country would be watching. It would shut down the race for a week.”

There is already some urgency to the wedding as Bristol, who is six months pregnant, may not want to walk down the aisle too close to her date of delivery. She turns 18 on October 18 . . .

. . . McCain is expected to have a front-row seat at Bristol’s wedding and to benefit from the outpouring of goodwill that it could bring. “What’s the downside?” a source inside the McCain campaign said. “It would be wonderful. I don’t know that there has ever been a pre-election wedding before.”

In the past couple of months alone, the McCain camp has done their best to insert their candidate in the middle of a war between Russia and Georgia, planned relief efforts in the wake of a potentially disastrous hurricane in Louisiana, and a major Wall Street financial crisis.

If they’re willing to game these serious events (and their respective human victims) for selfish political gain, I guess it’s no surprise that they’d manipulate the lives of a couple of teenagers for the same purpose.

Palin Debate Prep

Friday, September 26th, 2008 by fubar

The Philadelphia Enquirer:

All Lindsay would say was that Palin, who landed in Philadelphia yesterday, was here to do some preparation for her own debate against Democratic vice presidential nominee Joseph R. Biden Jr.

How, you may ask, is she preparing for the Vice-Presidential debate?

If tonight’s presidential debate takes place, an Irish bar in Center City will be in the limelight, hosting Gov. Sarah Palin at a pre-debate party.

Palin is expected to arrive at the pub between 7 and 7:30 tonight and “cruise around,” greeting people, O’Connor said.

Shut up you lot! It’s an Irish pub. She’s doing foreign policy research.
