After living through the Repug beatification of St. Ronnie, wherein they ascribed such miracles to him as the tearing down of the Iron Curtain and the end of the Soviet Union, I was wondering when the Neo-cons and other remnants of the old regime would start on the rehabilitation of Shrubya.

Didn’t take too long!  Former Bushie Elliott Abrams is already moving to credit Shrubya with the various ‘People’s Movements’ springing up in Tunisia, Egypt & Yemen.  Well I don’t see him crowing about the one place Shrubya did directly intervene, Iraq.  And we don’t see the angry crowds waving US Flags and yelling Viva Bush (or the Arabic equivalent thereof).

But I guess Abrams is right in one sense.  The protesters undoubtedly have a lot of issues on their plates, including a desire for more democracy.  However, what has them taking to the streets is the joblessness and growing poverty, stemming directly from the current economic crisis, which has direct roots in Shrubya & GOP policies to recklessly deregulate the U.S. Financial industry.  So in a sense, you could call Shrubya the “Godfather” of Arabic Street Protests!

I  wonder if the he or the GOP will still rush to claim credit if any of these People’s Movements take a turn towards Fundamentalist Dictatorship.

Via LeftWord, Arizona GOP Leader Anthony Miller resigns after getting death threats from Tea Bagger Brownshirts.  Remember them protesting too much about complaints of Tea Bag racism?

“I wasn’t going to resign but decided to quit after what happened Saturday,” Miller told The Huffington Post Wednesday. “I love the Republican Party but I don’t want to take a bullet for anyone.”

Miller, who is black, said a number of the attacks were racially based. At an event in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., Miller told The Huffington Post that someone called out, “There’s Anthony, get a rope.”

Sign of the times that this story got so little play.  Meanwhile, Jon Stewart’s Rally to Restore Sanity already a dim memory, Mark DeMoss officially disbands Civility Project in the face of Tea Bag nastiness.   The Reactionaries seem remarkably unrepentant and unwilling to tone down the hate talk, so I’m wondering where the next Reactionary assassination/spree killing will be.

A GOP loon is pushing to allow Reps to pack heat in the Capitol Building!!  I guess they are feeling left out of the action, they want to gun down Democrats themselves, eliminating the middleman!  They should go all the way in following Arizona’s example, and also allow booze in the Capitol Building.  Redneck legislators, guns, booze & heated political debate – we can one-up the Ukrainians!

According to SCOTUS “Justice” Scalia, the U.S. Constitution doesn’t protect women from discrimination. His fundee/wing-nut impulse to ‘divine’ the original ‘intent’ (in this case of the 14th Amendment) and ignore precedent seems more akin to Sharia law than contemporary Western Law:

Sharia judicial proceedings have significant differences with other legal traditions, including those in both common law and civil law. Sharia courts do not generally employ lawyers; plaintiffs and defendants represent themselves. Trials are conducted solely by the judge, and there is no jury system. There is no pre-trialdiscovery process, no cross-examination of witnesses, and no penalty of perjury^[101] (on the assumption that no witness would thus endanger his soul)^[102] Unlike common law, judges’ verdicts do not set binding precedents^{[103][104][105]} under the principle of stare decisis^[106] and unlike civil law, Sharia does not utilize formally codified statutes^[107] … Instead of precedents and codes, Sharia relies on medieval jurist’s manuals and collections of non-binding legal opinions, or fatwas, issued by religious scholars (ulama, particularly a mufti); these can be made binding for a particular case at the discretion of a judge.

I bet he’s sore that he doesn’t have the power to issue fatwas.  Maybe he’ll get his wish under a GOP Presidency, the last one didn’t worry about intent at all, he just ignored the Constitution altogether when it suited him.

*Update 1/5/11* Dublin Anarchist points out that by Scalia’s logic, it should be imperative to pass the Equal Rights Amendment, as the key argument against it was that women were already protected by the 14th Amendment.
