Combat troops could be out of Iraq in 19 months. It’s going to take quite a while to get to Gay Old Party pork at that rate. Not to worry : I’m sure the Dems get some too.

On the other hand, Gates is gunning for a bunch of big-ticket cold war holdover Pentagon boondoggles. Since we weren’t going to really truly be out of Iraq anyway before October, but the first big battle to wind down some of the DOD pork will be waged around then – it just might prove canny and progressive of Obama to have an unassailable right wing icon running interference with the “There goes Obama, soft on defense” crowd until the 2010 budget is, as it were, through the gates.
