I certainly felt bad for the folks (especially the little babies) who suffered as result of eating milk-based products from China that were deliberately adulterated with toxic waste.  However I’ve been pretty careful to avoid food-products from the PRC after the previous scandals (toxic waste in toothpaste, chemicals from human hair in soy sauce) and thought I was safe.  But no!  Cadbury (I am a choco addict) has been making some of its milk chocolate in China for some time and discovered melamine in the bars!!  Jesus, I’ve probably eaten some of that!

I guess executing the food safety director back in 2007, while cathartic, didn’t accomplish anything.  Rick Freedman was railing earlier about how Obama lost an opportunity to distance himself ideologically from McBush in the debate, specifically linking McBush to the extremist reactionary position of absolute deregulation of all markets.  Well the financial bailout is bad enough, but I don’t want my choco full of toxic waste!

Given the current meltdown of the financial system here and the pervasive and toxic adulteration of our foodstuffs make abroad, now is the perfect time for progressive leaders to put the stake in the heart of the reactionary anti-deregulation ideology vampire.

We gain nothing if we don’t use this opportunity to rub the noises of the likes of Grover Nordquist, the Heritage Foundation and other ideological water-carriers in the ‘presents’ they’ve left in our pantries and in our 401Ks.

*Update* I wonder who the evil genius melamine tycoon is in the PRC?  Think about it – there is some guy going around to various industries, getting paid to take this industrial byproduct off the hands of various factories, then dashing off to sell it to food companies as a food additive – and he’s been very successful at it!  Wouldn’t that make a great play or movie?
